It a limited VOC exemption in California on a case-by-case basis depending on the application. Benzyl Alcohol is considered desirable because of its polarity, low toxicity, and low vapor pressure.

The most common application for Benzyl Alcohol is as a solvent in inks, paints, and lacquers. It also can be used as a paint stripper when mixed with viscosity enhancers. Other applications include cosmetics, various creams, flavors, fragrances, and soaps.
