Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross first introduced the world to her model of the stages of grief in 1969. The model, which is explained in her book On Death and Dying, came to fruition during her work with terminally-ill patients and her recognition of a void of curriculum on the subject.

Kübler-Ross postulates that grief occurs throughout the course of 5 various stages: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. It is by enduring these various periods of grief that loss is overcome and personal growth experienced. They shouldn’t be shunned or avoided, but embraced.

Kübler-Ross’ model, though, pales in comparison to the roller coaster that is the life of a chemical sales rep. Instead of 5 stages, there are 9 phases for chemical sales rep’s to endure, varying from “This is great” to “This will never work” to “Why do I even try?”
